The Hermes Scarf: to elevate your airport style

When I had packed up all my stuff and was ready to head to the airport after a weekend at home my Mother was a little disappointed when I came down the stairs. She was concerned that my Blk Dnm Jeans, Chambray shirt and converse just wasn't chic enough for a day of travel. On some level I agreed with her, but I was tired and all my stuff was already tightly stuffed in my suitcase. She had a solution though, an Hermes scarf. "Here, let me tie it for you." I had a scared look on my face. My mother is a notorious fan of  "the neck tie" version of the parisian silk staple. "Mom, I'm not wearing Ferragamo flats, I'm not going to play bridge, and I'm not over 50- I'm not wearing a neck scarf!"

However, with an undercover smile on her face,  she managed to surprise me with a new style from the "how to tie" book that I hadn't seen before- "The pearl necklace" which is basically 3 square knots, one at the center and one on either side. As she started to bring it toward me I immediately wanted to put it on my head, where I knew it belonged. For me a head scarf is better than a neck scarf. I looked a little bit like the Statue of Liberty we agreed, but my denim outfit needed something chic and fun, so I kept it. I loved the look so much I had to pair it with denim again. I have to admit  this look is so me (with my black scrunchy and all.)

Shopping Round Up: April

Top Left Counter Clockwise: Naomi Maslon Four Line Ring, Acne Silk Mule, American Apparel Malibu Swimsuit,
Pamela Love for J-Crew Jean, Dolce and Gabbana Bra Top Dress, Les Aperizes Ruffle V-Neck Gown

It may be the end of April, but I have found some things that I have fallen in love with! I'm so excited to start wearing my Summer wardrobe again, and I think everything on this list will be a great addition to the closet.

1. Naomi Maslon Four Line Ring- such a classic. I've been wearing it on my pinky and it looks really cool! Kind of unexpected for a pinky ring...
(Available at Satine Boutique)

2. Acne Silk Mule- I've been developing a white cotton voile Summer dress in my free time, and I feel like these mules will go perfectly with it. Give me a big, chunky earring and I've got my look mastered for the Summer. (THAT'S RIGHT- I'M BRINGIN' BACK OVERSIZED EARRINGS. CHANDELIERS ANYONE??)

3. American Apparel Malibu Swimsuit- For the beach, I've been very into Barbie-esque silhouettes. This one reminds me of my Baywatch Lifeguard Barbies growing up. It's so fantastically eighties. Pair it with a pair of reflective glasses on a lanyard, and you're set.

4. Pamela Love for J-Crew Jeans- I am SO EXCITED for this collaboration! Pamela Love is such a jewelry rock-star. I can't wait to see what she does with denim!
(Available in May)

5. Dolce and Gabbana Bra Top Dress- I went to the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit last weekend and I loved his idea of female empowerment through over-idealized female silhouettes (for example, the cone bra). I feel like Dolce and Gabbana is doing this to an extent right now. This Summer I plan on bringing in the va-va voom with this Dolce and Gabbana dress. POWER TO THE LADIES!

6. Les Aperizes V-Neck Ruffle Gown- Les Aperizes just delivered to Satine Boutique and it's by far one of my most favorite new lines out there. It's simplicity is so beautiful. The fabrics feel great. I got this dress and recently wore it to the Satine Boutique and Lyst dinner for Jen Kao. It was perfect for an evening out. (Available at Satine Boutique)

New Beauty: 5 Favorite Products for Spring

Also in my new beauty regimen is  the "Wet - look" for hair- I love that it's a real style now because I hate blowdrying!! I've been using some awesome Redken products (including the Tousle whip) to keep it looking good wet (SI girl in the pool not dog caught in a storm.) Stay tuned for more on that. Also I'm thinking of getting this haircut because it's such "wood nymph perfection" but I probably won't as I'm too attached to my finally-long locks.

Style.com PRINT: I Love it!

Style.com Print is back with its second issue packed with street style photos, insider interviews with the hot new designers, and the rankings of the top shows of the season. And it's AWESOME! If you haven't already- go get your copy now!

A thought provoking cover from Alber Elbaz above.
Below, I show you my favorite pages from the book. I loved getting a "tour" of Dalston from Jonathan Anderson in "East Side Story" even though it was brief. And the "Molto Moto" shopping round up had the most exciting and off the beaten path items I've seen in ages.

I knew this photo was going to be in my post before I even read the article on the man-of-the-moment JW Anderson. She looked so cool and I could tell that she embodiedthe JW style- I was pleased when this was reaffirmed by Anderson's loving caption. I googled her after: the ln-cc website is really cool and so it their tumblr  from which I've already taken countless inspiration.

This was the BEST Shopping round up I've seen in a while. I know everyone freaked for Miroslava Duma's moto jacket (but probably didn't know where it was from) so it was nice to be informed of the label and have the question answered without having to ask.  Style.com print pushed the boundaries and didn't bore us with the usual safe-bet options chosen for commercial markets. They know their audience and for that I am thankful. They gave us all the wild and lust worthy moto jackets out there while remaining in a fair range of price point. No. 6, the Rag & Bone lurex moto is definitely an affordable piece that's totally on trend. It's perfect for transitional dressing and don't be surprised if you see me wearing it sometime soon!

Here in NYC we have been discussing Style.com print's genius (and not so genius) since the first issue;  from whether it would sell, to why can't all magazines be this cool. So What do you think of Style.com Print?

So Hot Right Now: Prada Spring 2008

When I told you 4 years ago that all I wanted was the 1st look from the new Prada collection you probably thought it was just a crush. But after dreaming of this crazy fairy collection for years I can say that it's true love.

The dizzying pace of the fashion world is often accused with pushing a desire for "newness" and can be a frustrating reminder of how quickly my tastes change. But recycling is always cool and when revisiting this wood-nymph laden collection I was pleased to see how well these looks fit into my favorite trends for 2012. Prints and plaid are spring staples, and Pajama dressing- the most surprising trend to develop recently- is my new go to (loose printed silks on top and bottom are all I'm wearing now) and these comfy chiffon and knit looks are the chicest loungewear (Lucia agrees). Whether matching or mixing prints one could only hope that the result is as simultaneously fierce and ethereal as the looks from this collection.

I'm now aggressively ebaying this collection- after all it's love. And it's so hot right now.

When I saw this green velvet sandal from the collection at Fisch From the Hip, I spazzed. Knowing it would be too big I tried it on anyway and tried to think of a way to grow my foot.

5 Days of Shoes for Spring 2012

WELL, WELL, WELL. It looks like I've acquired some new shoes this season. This is partly due to my massive list of personals I pre-ordered (dammit) and to drooling over some of these shoes in stores for months before finally caving. For Spring 2012, it seems as though I've picked up a lot of "sexy-vibes" heels... so weird. But here goes my 5 days of shoes for Spring 2012! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed taking pictures of my feet in pretty shoes.

1. JENNI KAYNE METALLIC PUMPS
I love, love, love the pointed toe on these. I look down at them and experience pure joy throughout the day.

2. CHLOE SUSANNA BOOT
These were a special Spring 2012 re-release. Never got my hands on them the first time around, so clearly had to sign up this season!

3. CELINE SUEDE COBALT HEELS
These were on my list for THREE MONTHS. I finally signed my life away in Paris. Again, when I look down at these shoes, I am beyond happy to see them on my feet.

4. LANVIN TWO TONE WEDGE
Girlfriend needs a wedge over here. All day, everyday. (But be careful, due to it's flat nature on the bottom, I've taken two tumbles.)

5. GUISEPPE ZANOTTI LEOPARD CALF HAIR SANDALS
These are so wild. Found them on sale and went for it.

xx

Overalls: The Velvet- 1996 and Now

Lucia basically summed it up when she claimed overalls to be her new thing: "Awkward? Definitely." So just be prepared to suffer some second-hand embarrassment from what you're about to see. My velvet overalls (which were so lovingly tracked down by the awesome crew at Screaming MiMi's after having tweet requested them several times) are not the most flattering thing I own. I think they're cool because they're comfortable and with some tailoring they might even be chic.

The feeling that I needed velvet overalls in my life was aroused about a year ago when a photo from my 3rd grade dance was so kindly posted to Facebook. My mom likes to recall my "first fashion moment" when she so proudly reminds me that while all the other girls wore smocked Laura Ashley dresses that she was the cool Mom who bought me velvet overalls and an embroidered ethnic vest to rock out to TLC to. I was spunky to say the least and so the outfit was appropriate on a functional level, but it was also different (from the usual Hilton Head attire) and I LOVED it. Shakira, my then bestie pictured below- also wearing velvet, and I pretended to be Cher and Dion singing "rollin' with the homies" and were certainly the rebels of our 30 person prep school class (not really a feat but ya know...)  I wanted to feel like I did then. Free. Unique (fancy and sporty at the same time lol) and something like the girls from the 90's that I worshiped: all individual, and carefree though slightly out of place.

I know these overalls are somewhat silly but whenever I wear them I feel totally like myself. I feel a little proud that I had such an individual taste at that young age and I try to hold on to it.

Denim: vintage overalls from Screaming Mimi's Alexander Wang denim / leather jacket, J.Crew chambray shirt, Mawi necklace, Alexander wang booties.
Furry: overalls, Zara Cat blouse, Zara shearling, vintage Ralph Lauren tortoise cuff.

In 1996 I was obsessed with:

So what did you rock in 3rd grade that you're looking to bring back?

The Challenge: Pastels

Just in time for Easter- Pastels. It's true I wasn't always on board...Back in December I said to Lucia: "If I hear someone say "pastel" one more time I'm going to scream!"I was not into it. I felt like every editor and fashion person was drinking the cool-aid- a frothy pink cool-aid served by Marc Jacobs in a gorgeous Louis Vuitton'd cup. So for me to even talk about mint green seriously was a long time coming- and I eased myself in... First I experimented with some Pink and purple makeup (I was really into the pink hair), then I became obsessed with the Givenchy Mermaid collection- which made the palest of pinks look tough. Call me a hypocrite but I realized if I really "hate" something that's probably the exact reason I should be trying it. So I bought this mint terry sweatshirt at Zara where everything felt tired and I had no idea what I was going to wear that night. It was the most basic item and quite out of character for me- which I didn't realize was exactly what I wanted and needed. This simple piece defined only by a color which can be found nowhere in my closet could be paired with all my favorite dark and earthy pieces and put a fresh spring spin on those old black jeans. With tough accessories I could wear pastels and not look like a cupcake. yay! This "pretty" color in a durable fabric was the way to go- powder pink in silk may be way too sweet, so try cotton, denim or even leather. I looked to Wayne Thiebaud whose sickly sweet paintings of cakes and cones are underscored by the darkest of blue shadows.

Here I have combined just about all the pastel I own.
